Every state and local government has a date.Yours is one of two.
The ADA Title II web rule holds state and local government web content and mobile apps to WCAG 2.1 AA. Which date applies depends on the size of the body. Vendors who sell to these bodies should know both.
Public bodies first, and the people who sell to them next
- 01
Governments with 50,000 people or more
State and local governments of this size, including their city, public education, health and transport bodies. Compliance date: April 26, 2027.
- 02
Smaller governments and special districts
Public entities under 50,000 people, and special district governments. Same standard, one year later: April 26, 2028.
- 03
Vendors who sell to them
The dates are set for the public body. If you supply its website, software or online services, expect the question to reach you before the date does.
Two dates, one standard
- 50,000 people or more
- April 26, 2027169 days left
- Under 50,000 people, and special districts
- April 26, 2028535 days left
Both dates come from the interim final rule of 20 April 2026, which extended the compliance dates in the final rule of 24 April 2024. The date is the deadline for all of it, not for a plan to start looking at it.

What vendors get asked
Expect a request for a VPAT. It is the document US buyers ask for, also called an Accessibility Conformance Report, and it goes through the WCAG criteria one at a time and says how your product does on each.
Fill one in from a measurement, not from memory. A VPAT with no measurement behind it is how a vendor walks into a dispute with a customer.
Measure one page.It costs nothing.
The free scan runs our automated WCAG 2.1 AA check on an address you give it. It is a preliminary check and it does not prove conformance: a full audit is always verified by a person.
Be told before the date, not after
One email thirty days before a date that applies to you, and one at seven. Nothing goes out until the address confirms, and one click stops it.

Common questions
- Which date applies to us?
- State and local governments with 50,000 people or more have April 26, 2027. Public entities under 50,000 people have April 26, 2028.
- Where do special districts fall?
- Special district governments are grouped with the smaller entities, so their date is April 26, 2028.
- What standard do we have to meet?
- WCAG 2.1 Level AA, on web content and mobile apps.
- Why do older articles give different dates?
- The final rule of 24 April 2024 set the original dates. The interim final rule of 20 April 2026 (91 FR 20902) extended them to the two dates on this page.
- We are a vendor. Does this bind us?
- The dates are set for public entities, not for vendors. What reaches you is the buyer's question, usually as a request for a VPAT. Ask counsel how your contracts treat it.
- Does a clean free scan mean we comply?
- No. The scan is a preliminary automated check. It finds faults worth fixing, but a full audit is verified by a person.
